Tribute to Welsh Rugby Legend Arthur Lewis

We pay tribute to the recent passing of Welsh rugby legend Arthur Lewis.

We, the trustees and committee of the Welsh Charitables RFC, are very saddened to hear of the passing of Arthur Lewis, a true great of Welsh rugby and a much-loved figure within the rugby community.

Arthur was a former Crumlin, Cross Keys, Ebbw Vale, Barbarians, Wales and British & Irish Lions centre, remembered as one of the most powerful and direct midfield players of his generation. A proud son of Crumlin and a stalwart of Ebbw Vale RFC, Arthur represented Wales with great distinction, winning 11 caps, captaining his country, and playing his part in a golden era of Welsh rugby.

He was also selected for the famous 1971 British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand, further underlining the high regard in which he was held across the game.

Arthur was a past recipient of a Welsh Charitables RFC Vice President tie and a loyal supporter of our charitable work over many years. He was a man who gave so much to rugby, both on and off the field, and he will be remembered not only for his strength, courage and commitment as a player, but also for his warmth, humility and friendship.

He will be sadly missed by the Welsh rugby community, the Welsh Charitables RFC, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Arthur’s wife Kath, his family, friends, former teammates, and all at Crumlin RFC, Cross Keys RFC and Ebbw Vale RFC at this very sad time.

For those wishing to pay their respects, Arthur’s funeral will take place on 19 June at 12:30pm at St Paul’s Church, Newbridge, followed by a reception at Crumlin RFC later that day.

Arthur, we thank you for your support, your dedication to Welsh rugby, and the wonderful memories you have left for us all.

Diolch yn fawr.
