Let me introduce to you to the Welsh Charitables RFC and the work we do for charities within Wales. Through the medium of rugby, the Welsh Charitables RFC raise monies for a number of worthy charities namely; St Anne's Hospice, WREX The Welsh International Former Players Association, Ty-Hafan the family hospice for young lives, The Prince's Trust Cymru and St David's Foundation Hospice Care and since December 2000 we have donated in excess of £60,000 to these worthwhile causes.
This has been due to various fundraising activities we have organised which have been supported by a number of businesses and the general public by sponsorship and attending our functions. We annually hold a Sportsmen's Dinner, a Celebrity Golf Tournament, a Tribute Dinner to a former International Player and fund raising charity rugby matches and we have now started an appeal to establish a trust fund for these charities with the "We Want A Million Appeal".
A number of former Internationals are involved with the Welsh Charitables RFC our Patron is the great JPR Williams MBE, some still play for us on a regular basis which quite naturally helps to bring in the crowds, presently our Team Manager is the Former Neath and Wales Captain Paul Thorburn and our Captain is the Former Swansea, Barbarian, Wales and British Lions Scrum Half Robert Jones, they all so kindly give of their time to help the Welsh Charitables RFC succeed in their ventures.
We also get a lot of publicity and press coverage from Wales's three main papers, The Western Mail, The South Wales Echo and The South Wales Argus also Real Radio publicise all our events and our Tribute Dinners have been regarded by many as one of the highlights of the Welsh Rugby Calendar. Under the new Chairmanship of the former Newport, Wales, British Lion and Salford, Wales and Great Britain Rugby League International David Watkins MBE I believe we will go from strength to strength.
The dinners are the most popular way in which we raise money. A world famous rugby star is invited along to talk about the good, the bad, the ugly, and of course the funny times of his career. It means a night of great food, great company and some brilliant stories to tell your friends. In recent years we have been lucky enough to listen to people such as Clive Rowlands, John Dawes, Derek Quinnell, Steve Fenwick, John Taylor, Mervyn Davies, Fran Cotton, Peter Wheeler, Gareth Edwards, Gerald Davies, Ian McGeechan, Roger Uttley, Tom David, David Watkins, and even Welsh rugby's biggest fan Max Boyce to name but a few.
Where does the money go?
All the cash now raised by the Welsh Charitables RFC is going into a trust fund under our "We Want A Million Appeal" which will give a much needed regular income into our nominated charities namely; St Anne's Hospice, WREX The Welsh International Former Players Association, Ty-Hafan the family hospice for young lives, the Prince's Trust Cymru and St David's Foundation Hospice Care.
