Bob Penberthy Charity Sportsman's Dinner
PONTYPRIDD RFC legend Bob Penberthy will be honoured at a Charity Sportsmen's Dinner at Sardis Road home of Pontypridd RFC on Friday 24th October 2008.
The event in October which just so happens to be Bob's 65th Birthday has been organised by the Welsh Charitables RFC to pay tribute to the player who was labelled the "Bionic Elbow" and who played an incredible 877 times for the Sardis Road club.
Pontypridd-born Bob, who now lives in Tylorstown, played for Pontypridd Schools before making his debut for Ponty against Penarth in November, 1961.
He was unlucky to miss out on international honours but went on to play for Glamorgan County and also represented the Barbarians.
The line-out strength of Bob Penberthy played a great part in Ponty's success during the 1970s and 1980s and he was a formidable opponent.
Bob gained immense respect, both on and off the field, when he played for Pontypridd.
David Power, honorary secretary of the Welsh Charitables RFC, said: "There will be a number of former 'greats' from the 1960s up to the present day turning out to support Bob, and his wife Sue, on this special occasion.
"This includes legends such as Clive Rowlands, John Dawes, David Watkins, Barry John, JPR Williams, Dai Morris, Steve Fenwick, the Pontypool front row, Mervyn Davies, John Perkins and Ponty's own Russell Robins, Neil Jenkins and Tom David – so a great night should be had by all!"
Through the medium of rugby the Welsh Charitables RFC raises funds for a number of worthy charities throughout the Principality, namely: Ty-Hafan, the Children's Hospice in Wales; St Anne's Hospice; St David's Foundation Hospice Care; WREX (The Welsh Rugby Former International Players Association) and The Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust (a trust for players at all levels who have been seriously injured while playing the sport).
All proceeds from the dinner will go to the Welsh Charitables "We Want A Million Appeal" to set up a trust fund for the above charities.
Seats for the dinner are £45 each or £450 (per table of 10) inclusive of a five course meal.
