Tribute Dinner for Phil Bennet OBE

2008 is a special year for Phil Bennett

One of Wales' most famous number tens is celebrating a year of special anniversaries in 2008. 2008 is the year Phil Bennett turns 60, 30 years since he retired from international rugby, and 35 years since he started the move which ended in Gareth Edwards scoring "that" try in 1973.

To celebrate such a landmark year the Welsh Charitables RFC are giving him the honour of a charity tribute dinner at City Hall in Cardiff on Friday 22 August.

Rugby fans are invited to join him and many other Wales and British Lion players on this special evening. Tickets at £45, include a five course dinner, and are available by calling David Power, secretary of the Welsh Charitables RFC, on 07973 705062.

David said: "Phil's skills on the rugby field added to the evidence to support the legendary existence of a 'Welsh fly half factory'! He made history on his debut against France in 1969 when he was the first Welsh replacement to given a cap. Rugby fans today still talk about his devastating sidestep and famous swerve which young players try to copy. We think it is very appropriate to honour him in such as special year and hope that rugby fans of all ages will join us to celebrate his career and raise money towards our appeal."

All the money raised will go the Welsh Charitables RFC "We Want a Million" appeal, to set up a trust fund to support Ty- Hafan The Children's Hospice in Wales, St Anne's Hospice, St David's Foundation Hospice Care, The Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust (A Trust to support players at all levels injured whilst playing the game) and WREX The Wales Former Players Association.
